Digital
radios should provide good performance within the service area using the wire
aerial supplied with the set. In-car sets will probably require a separate
digital aerial that will normally be supplied with the set. The instructions
supplied with several of the current domestic sets are not particularly good
on how to install the aerial. All digital radio transmissions are vertically
polarized. The aerial should be installed with the elements vertical and not
horizontally as was the norm with FM.
Each SCORE transmission network employs multiple transmitters operating in
a single frequency network that is designed to provide robust reception, even
in the city centres. The internal aerial should be installed as high as possible
and away from sources of interference particularly computers and other digital
devices.
Reception of all the available digital radio services might not be possible
using the supplied aerial and in such cases an external Band III DAB aerial
may be required. SCORE recommends that the external aerial should be a simple
dipole or folded dipole to ensure reception of all the signals from the various
sites used for digital radio transmission.
The use of multi-element directional aerials should
be discouraged.

In
exceptional circumstances, where the location is on the edge of the reception
area and all of the transmitters are in the same direction a multi-eliment
aerial may make a difference.
We
plan to offer a list of aerial contractors in the near future, but in the
meantime if you require advice on the installation of DAB aerials eMail to
dab@srh.co.uk.
If
you are considering DIY installation then low cost DAB aerials are readily
available.

Simply
DAB1 - Indoor DAB aerial
A flexible flat profile aerial for indoor use suitable for DAB Digital radio reception in the UK, it has to be hung vertically on a wall or behind a curtain.
If you are in a poor reception area it cannot be guaranteed that this device will improve reception. Simply claim that tests have proved that the aerial performs slightly better than most supplied telescopic aerials and up to 16% increased sensitivity in some cases. However the DAB1 can be more convenient as it is possible to conceal it.
The DAB1 is only available in black and measures 1 metre in length, 25mm wide and 2mm thick with a 2 metre cable terminating in a F-Type plug suitable to connect to most DAB radios.
